CLASSIC RESORT FAMILY ESCAPE
In Partnership With my Friends at Viamede Resort
In what has been a magical summer, our visit to Viamede Resort in Kawartha was a highlight. I was invited, with my family, to spend a weekend to explore and enjoy the century old resort hotel. I hadn't previously heard of Viamede and wasn't certain what to expect – it turns out that it's a hidden gem that is a tradition to many families who return every year. We stayed in a charming two-bedroom cottage and there was a good selection of things to do during our weekend visit.
The boys loved the lake and the enormous floating trampoline. We also paid a visit to the indoor/outdoor pool and I indulged in a visit to the eucalyptus steam room and sauna for a spa-like time out.
There is also a sweet little farm on the property and we spent some time with the chickens & turkeys who were roaming about alongside the pig pen and quail cage. Stumbling onto a trail we followed signs with "Oak" printed on them and were rewarded with finding this beauty at the end of the trail:
The jewel in the crown was our memorable visit to Mount Julian, the on-site fine dining restaurant. While the boys made their own pizzas, painted birdhouses and watched a movie, in the nearby Dining Hall, hubby and I were able to enjoy a five-course tasting menu and wine pairing (there were also seven and nine course options available). Under the direction of chef Kevin McKenna, we felt incredibly spoiled with his delicious menu, based on fresh local ingredients (many farmed and foraged on site). The vegetarian options were well thought out and intentional, not the poor second fiddle to the "real" meal. It was a true experience. By the end I was so entranced – and on the fifth glass of wine! – that I forgot to take a picture of the amazing finishing dessert; "Berries 'n Cream – Buckhorn Strawberries & Raspberries, Milk crumb, Sweet Cicely , Meringue & Bone Marrow) – I still think about it.
Thank you to Viamede Resort for being such wonderful hosts! So glad that we're now in on the 'secret'.
