Reading List: Independent Magazines

Anthology magazine, Living With Substance & Style ~ Pure Green magazine ~ The Art of Eating

I have recently developed a passion for relatively obscure magazine titles. Beautifully styled and executed these magazines are print at it’s best – every issue feels like a collector’s item. I’ll always pick up my monthly stack of the usual suspects but it’s a true pleasure to find material that strays from the ubiquitous trend mill.

Reading List: 100 Dresses according to Koda, Rubenstein & Estes

I was cruising through the Chapters Indigo website in search of the most recent title for my book club when I remembered that I wanted to check out 100 Dresses: The Costume Institute The Metropolitan Museum of Art by Harold Koda, Curator-in-Charge of the Costume Institute (also one of the masterminds behind the record-setting Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibit). Upon typing the keywords “100 Dresses” several titles came up including The Hundred Dresses, a sweet children’s novel by Eleanor Estes and 100 Unforgettable Dresses, a new tome by Hal Rubenstein, Fashion Director of In Style.

All three were added to my virtual shopping cart and are a welcome addition to my book collection (I never did get around to finishing that book club purchase, whose title shall remain unnamed as it was bo-ring). The children’s book is a lovely story and both the Koda & Rubenstein anthologies are a fab archive of some of the most definitive dresses in fashion. Of course, the In Style title is more celeb & cinema focused, but it’s really interesting to learn the how & why of the dresses were chosen and how they made their mark in fashion history.

Best Books of 2011

As you may know, I have a love affair with books. I very often have a book tucked in my purse and secretly appreciate small delays such as line-ups and slow subways as an opportunity to enjoy a few extra pages. With the holidays around the corner, I thought that I would share my absolute favourite reads of 2011. Although, most are new (a couple yet to be released), some are not, and a couple are actually sitting unread on my bedside table but I look forward reading them.
