Nobody did pastels for spring better than Philip Lim. How to wear without teetering to the saccharine? Top-to-bottom, crisp tailoring with an unexpected jolt of bold colour via a statement accessory.

Perhaps it’s the mild weather, but it seems that spring– fashion in particular– is on the mind of many. I’ve had a few questions about what my favourite trends are for the upcoming season and thought that I’d share this clip that I shot with Global News on what to watch for – remember I’m just the messenger

I have recently developed a passion for relatively obscure magazine titles. Beautifully styled and executed these magazines are print at it’s best – every issue feels like a collector’s item. I’ll always pick up my monthly stack of the usual suspects but it’s a true pleasure to find material that strays from the ubiquitous trend mill.

While certainly a statement, deep burgundy seems so wearable even when done head-to-toe.

Vibrant, juicy colours are certainly a way to make a strong sartorial impact and we’re seeing the trend worn from top to bottom. I love the statement and admire the fearless look-at-me factor, but day-to-day, I am more likely to stick to one knockout colour per outfit and temper it with neutrals, metallic and maybe wee bit of animal print (pretty much a neutral in my book).

I was cruising through the Chapters Indigo website in search of the most recent title for my book club when I remembered that I wanted to check out 100 Dresses: The Costume Institute The Metropolitan Museum of Art by Harold Koda, Curator-in-Charge of the Costume Institute (also one of the masterminds behind the record-setting Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibit). Upon typing the keywords “100 Dresses” several titles came up including The Hundred Dresses, a sweet children’s novel by Eleanor Estes and 100 Unforgettable Dresses, a new tome by Hal Rubenstein, Fashion Director of In Style.

All three were added to my virtual shopping cart and are a welcome addition to my book collection (I never did get around to finishing that book club purchase, whose title shall remain unnamed as it was bo-ring). The children’s book is a lovely story and both the Koda & Rubenstein anthologies are a fab archive of some of the most definitive dresses in fashion. Of course, the In Style title is more celeb & cinema focused, but it’s really interesting to learn the how & why of the dresses were chosen and how they made their mark in fashion history.

I adore this pair of “Mandy” jeans by Citizens of Humanity. Was going to pick up a pair from Narwhal but it’s tricky buying denim when eight months pregnant, even if you know your size; it’s one of those things that’s best tried on just to be sure. A print like this reminds us that spring is will soon be on the way. If I could, I’d wear these now with darker chunky knits and move on to bigger and brighter things and the weather warms (or on especially grey days to add a burst of colour).
