Earlier in the year I was among some lucky media who were invited behind the scene to catch celebrated photographer Caitlin Cronenberg doing her thing at a photo shoot of the 10th anniversary White Cashmere Collection. On set at the AGO, I of course used the opportunity to chat with Caitlin about her personal style. Here's what she had to say:
Do you prefer to dress for an occasion or for everyday?
I like both because day-to-day I really like to feel comfortable and unrestricted so that I am able to just move around freely as I do my job. But I like having opportunities to dress up every once in a while so that I can do something completely different from what I'm comfortable with.
Your all time favourite outfit:
When I was in Cannes this past May and I wore a Greta [Constantine] dress – cut down to here, totally backless, a huge belt and killer shoes. I felt like I was killing it big time. My mother was like "uhh..." She was into it but you could see my whole tattoo and it was freezing. I love a good dress. A dress that makes you feel completely confident is very empowering.
Do you have a signature style or do you prefer to keep 'em guessing?
Neither. My day-to-day is really boring and totally utilitarian for work because, more often than not, I'm climbing on things or sitting on the floor or doing all sorts of things where I'm going to get dirty and show everyone my everything if I'm not in pants. So I'm just a pants and shirts kind of girl during the week. I'm not a cute shoes & skirts type of person day-to-day. When I need to go out I just like wearing black whenever possible. So I just have pieces that are black and I try to add interesting things to them, I feel like I sometimes I feel stylish but more often than not I'm pretty boring.
Who are your favourite designers?
Some of my most comfortable dresses have been Greta Constantine. And I'm big on shoes. I'm a Louboutin whore. I'm more into single sole, I'm not as much into platforms.
Always stylish or does even fashion need to take a break?
Style always takes a break with me. It's like on vacation then it just dips back in every once in awhile. I don't think a lot about how I dress day-to-day . If I have a meeting or something I will put a little more effort into it but at the end of the day I have to carry equipment so I don't wear nail polish because it's just going to chip. And I don't wear heels because I'm just going to fall. And I don't wear skirts because I'm going to flash everyone. My style is boring but I have had occasion to step it up. When I do events and, especially during film festival, I feel like I have put on some good shows.
