Born & raised in T.O., Jaclyn has amassed a legion of fans, who can't get enough of her downtown chic fashion sense. Happy to oblige, the social media darling shares her sartorial sensibility, via her popular Queen West boutique (and celeb sighting destination – Jessica Alba, Shenae Grimes & Rachel McAdams are reported visitors), regular snaps of outfits and her own clothing line, with her cousin Gillian Young, jac and gill. Rounding out her cool girl status, she's even starred in her own reality series (jaclife, Slice 2010) & moonlights as the lead singer of the band Dolly Shot. Jaclyn checks in with The Style House to offer her take on personal style.
Do you prefer to dress for an occasion, or for everyday?
I prefer to dress for an occasion, but daily life often turns into an occasion! Putting yourself together and feeling your best actually increases your confidence. Personal style is a great form of self-expression and you deserve to look your best all the time. That doesn't mean you have to do your hair, or wear loads of make up everyday - just make sure that what you are wearing expresses your true self and portrays how you are feeling and how you want to feel that day... Besides, you never know who you are going to run into!
Would you rather be overdressed or underdressed?
Do you have a signature style or do you prefer to “keep 'em guessing”?
My style changes everyday, depending on my mood, who I'm hanging out with or what I am doing that day/night, but for the most part, I often combine the minimalism of the 90's with one staple piece (whether it’s a jacket, jewellery or shoes.
Your all-time favourite outfits:
UNIF Silk Boss Robe, Mink Pink Dress, and Jeffrey Campbell platforms worn to my first performance at The Cameron House.
Cara Cheung jewel dress, jacflash blazer and sunglasses, and Jeffrey Campbell shoes worn during fashion week last season and featured on Flare.com.
jac and gill dress worn at the Topshop opening at Parts and Labour with Shenae Grimes, Amanda Lew Kee and Lauren Soper.
Greta Constantine “Jaclyn” top (named after me!), jacflash leather leggings, Dolce Vita spiked pumps, Low Luv cross worn to the Greta Constantine show (Spring '12).
Your top 3 celeb style moments:
Olsen Twins at the Fall 2008 Chanel fashion show (I admire their casual, relaxed look at this show... they are not trying too hard, but still look so well put together)
Johnny Depp and Kate Moss – simply beautiful (I love the "matching" leather jackets - they seem so comfortable together and effortlessly cool.)
Mick Jagger and Bianca Jagger 70’s allure (I adore their bohemian style. They have perfectly complimented their hippie approach with glamour.)
I love it when “couples” (whether sisters, friends, partners etc...) are this in sync and compliment one another, especially in the way that they dress.
What would you buy with an unexpected windfall?
I have my eye on jacflash’s Jeffrey Campbell black Freda shoe, Jeffrey Campbell Coltrane shoe and this Muuba leather jacket- jacflash everything of course!
Will you suffer for fashion or should it be comfortable? Is there an occasion that you will break this rule?
You should be able to wear your outfit without looking like you are uncomfortable or in pain by the end of the night, otherwise what is the point? Stick to high heels with a platform so you can still strut out the door the same way you strutted in. Opt for the jean size that allows you to breathe... Because no one but you can see the tag, but people will notice how awkward you look after dinner if you are feeling the ‘squeeze’. If you don't feel comfortable, you just won't look confident and doesn't that just defeat the purpose?
Always stylish or does even fashion need to take a break? Any exceptions?
Be stylish when you feel like it, and don’t when you don’t. The purpose of fashion is to express yourself and how you are feeling that day - but don't forget that you can change how you feel by how you look!
Team Anna (Wintour) or Team Carine (Roitfeld)?
I love that Carine Roitfeld is not afraid to take risks and make mistakes. She is honest, real and relatable in regards to her fashion choices as well as her personal life and personality.
