Mules – Trend Tolerance: Medium/High

I recently swung by Arcadian Court, at The Bay, for the The Room's legendary semi-annual sale – the stuff of dreams. I had no business being there, as you might imagine, because of my job, I'm in stores a lot and so I periodically self-impose shopping blackouts to keep things in check. Yada, yada, yada... I found myself on the 8th floor perusing the racks. A few industry associates, who I ran into, indulged in some serious finds, but I walked away from the sale empty handed and virtuous. But I could not stop thinking about a pair of Nicholas Kirkwood mules that I left behind. The only pair. On the final day of the sale, I headed back with a girlfriend, certain that they had been snatched up, but holding on to a glimmer of hope, that, were it meant to be, they'd be waiting for me. And there they were. Obviously it was a sign from fashion heaven. Obviously. Afterward I spotted a pic of Gwyneth Paltrow in my exact pair – taken almost a year earlier, but still.

Admittedly there are issues concerning the mule. They do have a certain hoof-like quality but, unlike the chunky & square toe models from the last go-around in the '90s, this recent reincarnation is significantly sleeker & more sophisticated. Still, probably not a good call if you have thicker ankles. Don't even think about it with cracked heels. Also, I'm not totally confident that I can walk without flinging the shoe right off my foot. So there's that. But I'm willing to risk the shame – they are that beautiful.
