The first person of colour to helm a mainstream Canadian publication, as Editor in Chief at Flare magazine (1996 to 2004) she helped to firmly establish the publication as the country’s best-selling fashion title (foreign or domestic). Time Inc. & Essence Communications soon came calling and appointed the illustrious editor to the US-based Suede magazine, a short-lived but highly lauded fashion book. It earned praise from prestigious critics including David Carr of the New York Times and Advertising Age’s 'Magazine A-List'. Today, in a multifaceted role at Zoomer Media (print, online, broadcast – whew!), the magazine for the 40-plus style savvy set has been called the "Baby Boomer Bible" by industry authority MastheadOnline. There is arguably no one in Canada who is more frequently photographed or who has topped more "Best Dressed" lists than Ms. Boyd. A frequent subject of Bill Cunningham’s cult favourite New York Times weekly 'Street Style' column and mentions in everything from Fashion Week Daily to Women’s Wear Daily; Italian Vogue to American Vogue; the National Post to the New York Post, and the mighty O publications – O, The Oprah Magazine and O at Home, Suzanne fascinates fashion watchers with her mega style wattage. Today, she shares the details of her personal style.
Do you prefer to dress for an occasion or for everyday?
Everyday is an occasion because those clothes aren't going to wear themselves!
Would you rather be overdressed or underdressed?
I make a point of being overdressed.
Do you have a signature style or do you prefer keep 'em guessing?
If I had to define it I would say glamour for day, drama for night because it's how I entertain myself.
Your all-time favourite outfits:
I can't choose: They've all blended together over the years in a cloud of fur, feathers and glitz.
Your top 3 celeb style moments:
1. Bianca Jagger, at her wedding to Mick Jagger.
2. Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth.
3. Naomi Campbell in the 90s.
What is on your shopping list for Fall?
Maison Martin Margiela Tuxedo coat, Celine tuxedo lace ups with gold hardware, Celine ID tag neck piece, Ann Demeulemeester white dress (the first exit down the runway), Rick Owen funnel knee high runway boots with white lace lashing at the ankle, Pink Tartan gun metal pyjama skirt suit, Greta Constantine black structured dress, Ray Ban gold mirror aviators, and a 5 inch heeled, pointy toe pump — in black. I'm still on the hunt for the perfect pair.
Heels or flats?
I wouldn't be caught dead in a loafer, but a good flat can look right. But it's heels. The higher the better.
Will you suffer for fashion or should it be comfortable? Is there an occasion that you will break this rule?
Comfort is overrated.
Always stylish or does even fashion need to take a break? Any exceptions?
Fashion may take a break, but like money, style never sleeps.
On an average day, how long does it take you to get out of the door? How about on a Special occasion?
Forever! Every Time!
Team Anna (Wintour) or Team Carine (Roitfeld)?
I am a real fan of Carine's French insouciance and chic but, as there is nothing chicer then power, it's Team Anna all the way.
